Most people know Elon Musk as the Tesla CEO, but there are few who are aware of the fact that he founded a $1 billion non-profit organization called OpenAI. Now, the breaking news is that the billionaire is giving up his place in the leading board of the mentioned company and everybody is wondering what could have caused this decision.
Elon Musk’s decision was announced on the 20th of February. The official version is that the entrepreneur is stepping down from his leading role in the companies’ board because he wants to avoid a conflict of interest connected with his activity at Tesla.
The company Elon Musk just left, OpenAI, was founded in 2015 and has reached $1 billion in funding, although it is a non-profit organization. The organization is based on researching issues about technologies for developing artificial intelligence and on studying its’ social impact and evaluate the potential risks for the national safety. One important creation is that OpenAI has released artificial intelligence capable to play video games and this could be a huge progress. On the other hand, one major risk is that the artificial intelligence could be the victim of malicious activities, like drone attacks.
Even if he left the OpenAI board, Elon Musk announced that this project still means a lot to him and he will continue to support it with advice and funding. If Tesla becomes more interested in artificial intelligence, the potential conflict of interests regarding Elon will be eliminated. Since Tesla produces electric cars, the company is very interested in investing more money in developing artificial intelligence; the associates could even end up developing a technology for self-driving cars.
With all the known benefits, Elon Musk still admits that the artificial intelligence is very dangerous, maybe even riskier than North Korea. From this we can conclude that no good thing can be taken for granted.
