It looks like today marks the launch date for the new version, Vulkan 1.1, made by the Khronos Group.
What are some of the new features of this update
For starters, some of the new features of the Vulkan 1.1 represent adding permanent versions to features that were just extensions in the last build. Generally speaking, these new additions center on creating the base model for future GPU version, making the Vulkan more compatible with DirectX 12 and improvements to the API.
Major work has been done for the API
It looks like a lot of hours have been poured into making sure that the Vulkan 1.1 has improved its multi-GPU support. What does this do? Well, it is in charge of making sure that one program can use multiple GPUs. In the past, this task was usually done by the driver but now this new update lets the director take control of things. Moreover, developers are now able to make a group where they can add up multiple GPUs to just one device and then choose how parts of the work are going to be divided between each GPU. GPUs can now use resources from one another and even show images that were rendered by another GPU.
Sadly, it looks like this feature does have a couple of downsides, such as the fact that it needs each GPU to match in order for it to work, or at the very least be very similar. DirectX 12 seems to be better as it allows users to mix GPUs, giving users a variety of choices.
It looks like the Vulkan 1.1 is better at rendering VR. It gives users the option of multiview, which lets them have multiple views at the same with very little effort on their part.
Motion video Codecs
The Vulkan 1.1 is now able to support YUV/YCbCr color encodings that are usually used for motion video. This feature goes hand in hand with their new decision to add a feature that is going to help protect the content that is used. This means that the Vulkan lets you use its color encoding for your desktop composition while also protecting your content at the same time. Pretty neat, right?
With this new GPU, it looks like Khronos now has the lead on all things related to GPUs and it is going to be interesting to see if there is going to be a competitor in the near future.
